The NEIC Sports, Recreation & Wellbeing programme ensures a wide variety of activities are available within our community. Check out some details below for a taster of what’s on offer in the North East Inner City!

Cycle Right

The NEIC Initiative has collaborated with the Department of Transport, the Road Safety Authority and Cycling Ireland to facilitate the Cycle Right programme. This programme, which provides practical cycle safety and skills training to promote competent and confident cyclists, is now in place across numerous primary schools in the NEIC. The goal for Cycle Right is to present each young person with the opportunity to gain the skills required to cycle safely by the time they leave primary school.

Active Ageing with Eddie

The NEIC Initiative proudly supports Active Ageing with Eddie. Each class is tailored to accommodate varying abilities and mobility levels, focusing on forging a supportive atmosphere that promotes a healthier, more active lifestyle. The class has been so popular and well-attended that an additional weekly class has been scheduled in order to meet demands.

Walking Football

Walking Football has made a sizeable impact on our community in the North East Inner City. This addition to the lineup of NEIC activities has enjoyed great success, with participants scarcely missing a game, and wholly encapsulates the idea that sport can be gratifying no matter you experience, age or gender.

After Care Recovery Group Cycling Club

The ACRG Cycling Club is the very first inner-city cycling club. The newly formed cycling club has progressed to setting up their very own cycling route and are new members of Cycling Ireland. The NEIC Initiative were thrilled to be able to support the group through the purchase of twelve new bikes.

Yoga

The NEIC Initiative continues to support yoga programmes throughout the area. The NEIC Yoga Training Programme has been a great success and provides new yoga teachers in the area with certifications. Course participants set out on an eleven month journey working to develop their knowledge and hone their skills. This course has garnered huge interest in both a community and national capacity and was featured on RTÉ’s Nationwide on the 9th of October 2023. Yoga has huge benefits for our community, both physically and mentally.

Weightlifting

The Introduction to Weightlifting programme has been a huge hit for our community. The class, which takes place in what was previously an unused gym, has received so much interest that an additional trainer is now assisting in leading the class.

Handball

Handball has been a focal point for the NEIC Initiative. In close collaboration with Dublin GAA Handball and the National Handball Centre, the NEIC Sports & Wellbeing team have worked to introduce handball to schools and outreach resource centres in the area. A social handball programme for beginners has provided participants with the opportunity to engage with Dublin GAA Handball coaches and to further develop their skills and techniques in the game.

Basketball

Basketball has been a great success in the community, with the NEIC establishing its first club - the North East Inner City Trojans - in 2022. The Trojans have become an immense source of pride for the children on the teams, and due to increased popularity, the club has continued to expand. In addition to the academy that boasts over 100 participants in regular attendance, the NEIC Trojans also host hugely successful camps.

Running

The community of the North East Inner City has shown a heightened interest in running and we are delighted to support programmes that encourage this increased popularity. Weekly running sessions with local athlete Ruth Barry have been extremely successful in perking up Wednesday lunchtimes.
